Delhi: Improvised explosive device found in Ghazipur flower market in abandoned bag ahead of Republic Day, bomb disposal squad at site

Just a few days left for Republic Day and elections, an improvised explosive device was found in an abandoned bag in the eastern part of the national capital. The bomb was recovered from Phool Mandi of Delhi’s Ghazipur market, triggering panic among people.

According to Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana, there was no blast, and the IED was seized. He further added that we’re working with a number of agencies to figure out the details, major casualty averted.

The bomb was disposed of in a controlled explosion by being pressed into an 8-foot deep trench, causing a loud noise and smoke in the area.

When did the incident take place?

Around 11 am, they received a report regarding a suspicious bag in the market, according to an official. The National Security Guard (NSG) and members of the Special Cell were rushed to the scene. Several fire tenders were also deployed, according to reports.

Asthana told the leading news channel an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was placed at the market by a purported customer. Around 9:30 am, the man arrived at the market on a scooter and pretended to be purchasing flowers from a shop.

What has been recovered from the abandoned bag?

NSG Director General MA Ganapathy said that the chemical compounds like RDX and Ammonium Nitrate in the manufacture of IED were recovered from the Ghazipur market. The weight of recovered IED recovered from Ghazipur was approximately 3 kg. NSG received information from Delhi Police around 11 am and the explosive was defused around 1.30 pm.

The IED was found a week after security authorities in five states were alerted to the danger of a terror strike ahead of Republic Day celebrations and the start of election season.

Officials of the Delhi Police Special Cell said they are preparing to file a complaint under the Explosives Act with the Special Cell.
