The government has announced a 23.29 per cent pay hike for government employees.

The retirement age has been raised from 60 to 62 years. The benefits were announced by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. The pay revision and other benefits were announced after discussions with leaders of various employees’ associations. The Chief Minister has announced that various unresolved issues of the employees will be resolved by June 30 this year. The pay revision will come into effect from July 1, 2018. Other benefits are effective April 1, 2020. The amount will be disbursed from January 1, 2022 as per the new pay scale with revised pay scales.

The decision will create an additional financial burden of Rs 10,247 crore per annum for the government. The CM has told the employees’ associations that the arrears of welfare benefits of the employees will be paid along with the January salary.
In addition, all outstanding payments, such as provident funds, insurance and leave encashments, will be fully disbursed by April. The Cabinet sub-committee is examining the participatory pension scheme. A decision on the matter is likely to be taken by June 30

Some commented that the pay rise was the biggest recognition employees could receive during the Kovid era. At the same time, it has been criticized that raising the retirement age is a sign that new jobs will not be created.
