Here are the latest updates on the new coronavirus variant:

  1. The Union government on Thursday told states and union territories to ensure the setting up of district and sub-district control rooms to deal with coronavirus cases, ANI reported. The Centre said that the control rooms should have enough staffing, doctors and a mechanism for monitoring the availibility of beds. It added that depending on the case load, the control rooms should remain operational round the clock to provide guidance and support to patients.
  2. Amid a resurgence of coronavirus cases in India, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya urged people to follow guidelines, ANI reported. Earlier in the day, India reported 90,928 new daily cases, up nearly four-fold since the start of the year.
  3. Delhi is expected to record 14,000 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, Health Minister Satyendar Jain said, reported PTI. Jain said the infection tally in the city was high as a large number of people were being tested for Covid-19. Meanwhile, officials said that family members of people who had died due to Covid-19 will get an additional one-time ex gratia assistance of Rs 50,000 from the Delhi Disaster Response Fund.
